received $700 worth of future flight coupons and they got us to our
original destination within 4 hours of our originally scheduled arrival.
Not bad for giving up two seats. We always listen for the oversold
announcements and if you want to do something like this, go up to the
agent before hand and offer to sell your seats if they are in the over
sold status. Great way to save and get free or cheap airline
tickets.
The old days where you could be really nice to an airline ticket agent
and they upgrade you are almost gone. It happens, but not very
often. We have had two situations where we were upgraded to
Business Class on an international flight and upgraded to first class to
Hawaii. These are hard to find and to get. You usually need
to be a member of that airline's frequent flyer program and have some
ranking or status. Like being a Platinum or Silver member, etc.
One of the weirdest upgrades we ever received was on Continental coming
back from Paris. I had wandered to the back of the Boeing 777 and
found 3 or 4 seats vacant where I could stretch and be alone. A
few minutes before take off a senior flight attendant that we knew from
several roundtrip flights to Europe came looking for me and said to
follow him up to the front of the plane. I was thinking "what the
heck did my wife do now?". Well, a lady behind her starting
getting loud and aggressive about my wife not putting her seat back and
the flight attendant knew that we were frequent and good flyers with
their airline and did not want a scene, so, instead of upgrading the
loud and aggressive larger lady, they upgraded us to BusinessFirst the
whole way back to the USA...Sweet.
You will find many different ways to save money when flying and always
remember that if you find a fare that you like and feel fits your needs,
book it. Do not wait for a better fare or deal. The
computers run the fares and they go by the numbers and when the numbers
jump, you loose. There are many different ways to find and book
